WHO SHOULD ATTEND

 The Evesham Township Police Department is proud to offer the Citizen Police Academy (CPA) to local residents. The program is designed to increase the understanding of the Police Department. The CPA is offered in two sessions, one in the spring and one in the fall, running eight consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 9:00 pm. Students will learn from department and court personnel who are experts in the areas of patrol and traffic operations, community oriented policing, narcotics, gangs, K-9, and prosecution of criminal and motor vehicle laws.

QUALIFICATIONS

Admission to the program is open to anyone who is at least 18 years of age or older, has a good standing in the community and is a resident of Evesham township. Further consideration is given to applicants who have no outstanding warrants for their arrest and no pending criminal cases. Applicants who are accepted to attend the CPA will be temporarily granted access to sensitive areas of the police department which will require the applicant to pass a thorough background investigation.

All potential participants must submit an application prior to being considered for the program. Applications are available on-line or may be obtained through the program coordinator or at Evesham Township Police station.

CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY

The CPA has been introduced in order to educate Evesham Township citizens about structure and activities of their police department. While the CPA class is not a “training class”, it is an exciting opportunity for residents to get a behind-the-scenes look at the various functions within the Evesham Township Police Department.

The idea of the CPA is one that informed educated residents will be supportive of police officers and the department. Additionally, those completing the program have the potential of becoming more productive within their own neighborhoods.

During the program classroom presentations, lectures and ‘hands-on” experiences offer residents valuable insight into the operations of the Evesham Township Police Department. These experiences along with the two-way communication established, furthers our efforts in improving the quality of life for residential and business communities throughout the township.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The CPA is designed to build a bond of mutual trust and respect between the police department and our citizens. Additionally, the academy highlights the importance of citizen participation in public safety, so that we as a community may remain free from the fear of crime.

CLASS TOPICS

Experienced police officers and instructors offer briefings, demonstrations, and engage in frank discussions about police operations with class participation. Topics covered during class include overviews of our department structure information on police recruiting and training and hands-on workshops in various areas. Some of the areas explored include, but are not limited to:

• Criminal Investigations
• Firearms Training
• K-9 Unit
• Special Response team (SRT)
• Crimes
• Gangs
• Identity Theft

The Evesham Township Police Department is hosting its annual Junior Police Academy day camp. The purpose of the Junior Police Academy is to provide young citizens with an introduction to Law Enforcement. Our goal is to motivate young people to be outstanding citizens and empower them to act as a positive influence in our community. The academy provides an opportunity for officers and students to see each other as people, rather than as adversaries. It will also transform the traditional role of the police officer into a mentor and a friend, while encouraging our young citizens to be partners in building safer schools and communities. While the students that attend the academy may not want to become police officers in the future, the program instills a confidence and sense of achievement that will benefit them for years to come.

The Junior Police Academy will cover a multitude of topics including, Social Media, Bullying, Motor Vehicle Law, DWI Enforcement, Teens and Drug Use, Crime Scene and Evidentiary Processing, Active Shooter Scenarios, and a K-9 demonstration. We will begin each day with an hour of light physical training and military drill.

Applications will be available at the Evesham Township Police Department between the hours of 8:30AM – 5:00PM Monday through Friday. The applications will also be available online for download at www.eveshampd.org. Completed applications must be turned into the police department in person.

We will have two separate academy weeks. The first week will be held July 22-26 and the second week will be held August 5-9. The academy will be held from 8:00am to 3:30pm. Recruits are only permitted to attend one week of academy. Spots are limited to 20 per class and will be filled as the applications are submitted and approved by our staff. There is no cost for the program but all recruits must be accepted through the application process.

Qualifications / Requirements:

1. Must be a resident of Evesham Township

2. Must be in Middle School or going into Middle school in the fall (current 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grade student)

3. Must be recommended by a sponsor (Principal / Guidance Department, Law Enforcement Agency, a community representative, coach, or religious leader.)

4. Must be able to participate in physical fitness activities (push-ups, sit-ups, light calisthenics, etc.)

5. Must be able to participate in a structured program

6. Have no criminal background or disciplinary problems which may preclude him/her from successful participation in the Academy

The Evesham Police Department proudly established a Police Chaplain Program in 2014. Currently, the program consists of 11 volunteer Chaplains. In 2014 the Evesham Police Department reached out to every house of worship in the township and received an overwhelming positive response from the different faith communities.

The ETPD Chaplain Program was established to serve and support the Evesham Police Department, focused on providing spiritual support for the community during traumatic events and incidents when called upon 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Operation Chill®

Evesham Officers will be “ticketing” kids who are caught in the act of doing good by giving them Slurpee beverage coupons.

Evesham Police Department and 7-11 partnering on a Community Policing Project

7-Eleven celebrates a generation of good behavior this year. For twenty years, US police officers have been ticketing kids with Operation Chill FREE Slurpee drink coupons. Many of those kids are adults now, and may even have children of their own who are eligible to receive a frozen treat for good behavior, compliments of 7-Eleven and the Evesham Police Department.

This initiative began in Philadelphia to give law enforcement officers a positive a positive reason to interact with children and teens. The initiative has now expanded to cities across the country. The Evesham Police Department is proud to partner with 7-Eleven in this program as our agency feels that this is a great way for our officers to connect with children in the community. Our officers will be “ticketing” kids who are caught in the act of doing good by giving them Slurpee beverage coupons. The coupons can be redeemed at any participating local 7-Eleven store.
